The girl with the numbered heart woke up in the library. It was snowing outside. Dopily, she watched people slip and slide on the grass outside. She still had one mitten on. The other hung from it on a thick red strand of wool.
She had no idea how long she'd been asleep. The radiator was too hot to rest on now though. Before, it had been just right. The last book she'd idly flicked through was open on the floor. She stared at it for a few seconds, rubbing her eyes, perhaps hoping that it would jump back into place on the shelf above.
"There you are!" half-shouted, half-whispered Riroum as his head popped around the bookcase, startling her. "I was so worried about you!" Again, a half-shout, half-whisper as one might in a library, in such a state of relief.
Riroum was by far the prettiest boy in the school and could do no wrong. Courteous, polite, impeccable, devout, he would throw down his coat over a puddle that he might think you'd step in, days before it rained. The girl with numbered heart loved him so but dare not speak of love on campus. She was waiting, frustrated, fit to burst, until the Summer holidays when, perhaps during an idle dusky walk back from fishing at the pond, Riroum might ask her if she loved him and she would say yes and they would kiss and the world would become one huge, beautiful firework.
Except the girl with numbered heart was number 386842197488322 and 765398 had only just been called.
